Mission and Ministry Committee

The Diocesan Mission and Ministry Committee exists to enable all congregations and individuals to discover, develop and share their call to mission and ministry as gifted to them by the Spirit, in the Sacrament of Baptism.

RESPONSIBILITIES

These include:

  • Mission 21 including the development of Continuing Congregational Development and Local Collaborative Ministry.
  • Oversight of the Diocesan Ministry Service which includes training for ministry both lay and ordained and general theological education.
  • Responding to ethical and the difficult questions of life and faith including those of social responsibility, justice, peace and creation and to be sensitive to the needs of those individuals they affect.
  • International contacts – the opportunities for sharing mission and ministry world-wide and learning from overseas partners.
  • Development of resources for Youth and Children.

Each of these areas form a working group under the co-ordination of the main committee with the ability to establish short lived task groups as and when appropriate.

STRATEGY

  • To stimulate diocesan thinking and to be pro-active in all aspects of God’s mission in the world and the ministry of Christ and to implement policy.
  • To encourage, enable and resource every diocesan congregation (and other agencies) in the discernment of their corporate vocation and the implementation of their mission and ministry strategies.

HOW IS THIS WORKED OUT?

  • Through chaplaincies in healthcare, universities, retail centres, education and prison: at Fort Kinaird retail park, Napier, Edinburgh and Heriot Watt universities and Diocesan Youth and children’s officer and Child Protection Officer.
  • Through the work of the Diocesan Mission Advisor: offering consultancy to congregations and individuals.Through the personnel and resources of the Diocesan Ministry Service.
  • Ecumenically in shared chaplaincies and community workers, as in the Granton Waterfront.
  • Through developing world-wide partnerships with Christians especially in Ghana, Northern Ireland (Connor Diocese) and Dunedin (New Zealand)
  • By the committee seeking to be at all times effective in the communication of mission and ministry polices, strategies and projects undertaken in or on the behalf of the Diocese.
