A little about us . . .
We are a small, but warm and friendly congregation having an average attendance of around 30 at our main service. Fellowship is encouraged among our members as to help this we have Area Groups as well as social occasions. House discussion groups meet during the year, usually in Lent and Advent. We enjoy considerable lay involvement in our worship and pastoral work. Our worship is Eucharistic, using the 1982 Scottish Eucharist Liturgy in our 10.30 worship with a mix of traditional hymns and praise songs. On the third Sunday the Eucharist incorporates Prayer for healing led by our healing Group. Our 1982 Liturgy setting “The Selkirk Setting” was written by our organist Mr Bernard Hill who is a music software publisher (www.braeburn.co.uk). A number of us have been to a Cursillo Weekend and we run occasional Alpha Courses. We also have an informal linking with the Episcopal churches in Galashiels and Melrose (The Triangle) which has its own programme of joint events and services.

The present church was opened for worship in 1869 although the congregation was formed in 1851 following a mission from St Cuthbert’s in Hawick. The church building is normally only open when in use but access can be arranged with the Rector.
As well as Victorian stained glass there is a fine example of modern work by Herbert Hendrie in the West Window dedicated to Lord Craigmyle. Fine carving to the reredos, altar and choir screen is by Robert Lorimer as are the pulpit and front doors. The present organ, built in 1876 by Jardine’s of Manchester for private use in a house in Windermere, was installed in St John’s by Wilkinson’s of Kendal in 1897. A modern electric piano is also used for worship. Our Banner group has created a number of wall banners for hanging during the Church seasons.
We are members of a very active Selkirk Council of Churches which enjoys joint activities and occasional joint services.
