About the Church . . . The foundation stone was laid on 30 March 1836. The Rt Revd James Walker DD Bishop of Edinburgh, Glasgow and Fife consecrated the church on 19 April 1837. The fine stained glass windows above the altar are dedicated to the memory of the Rt Revd Charles McKenzie, the first Bishop of Central Africa. The three subjects displayed are: 1) Christ calling the apostles “Follow me”; 2) Christ’s charge to Peter “Feed my sheep”; 3) St Philip baptising the Ethiopian “I believe”. There are three other stained glass windows depicting Christ the light of the world, the Holy Family and St Christopher. The organ is one of the smallest three manual instruments ever built. It was installed in 1909 by Harrison and Harrison, organ builders of Durham and London. It has been much praised for its compactness and for the excellence of its tonal quality by many visiting organists. The Vestry was enlarged in 1932 and renovated in 2001. Our church is open every day and many people visit the church to pray, to meditate or to reflect.
