A little about us...
St. Mary’s is an historic church in the old market town of Dalkeith. Built in 1845 the church is now a vibrant part of the local community. Up until 1915 St. Mary’s was the private chapel of the Dukes of Buccleuch and the church for local Episcopalians. It was given over the local congregation in 1915 and full ownership was passed over to the Diocese in 1958. St. Mary’s may have an historic building but the purpose of congregation here is to worship God and serve the community in which we live. St. Mary’s is an architectural gem. It sits in the grounds of Dalkeith Country Park. (Nearby is Dalkeith Palace which is now used by the University of Wisconsin.) St. Mary’s was built by the renowned Edinburgh Partnership of William Burn and David Bryce. It boasts a double hammer beam roof, beautiful French stained glass, heraldic Minton floor tiles, a memorial chapel by Sir Arthur Blomfield, poppy head pew ends and one of the last water powered organs in the United Kingdom built by one of Scotland’s greatest organ builders, David Hamilton.
We have now concluded three stages of our Restoration Project. The Organ was completely restored in 1996.
We also share our Rector with St. Leonard’s, Lasswade.
