A little about us...
Before 1897 the congregation of St Mary and All Souls was a mission formed by Christ Church, Duns. At that date the corrugated iron ‘Tin Tab’ Chapel at the Hirsel became redundant and was moved to the present site. A building fund was opened in 1900, the foundation stone laid in 1913 and the new, present, stone Church built by local craftsmen, of sandstone from Doddington near Wooler, was dedicated in 1914. Two stained glass windows in the apse, a third in the chancel and the triptych behind the altar were all donated. In 1958 the ‘new’ Hirsel Chapel was demolished and the altar, a beautiful set of vestments, altar frontals, pulpit and lectern falls and the pews were moved to St Mary’s. The organ was originally a Hamilton of Edinburgh manual with the Ingram of Edinburgh swell added in 1897 and it was overhauled by Church of Stamfordham in 1985. The bell is from the Cripplegate Foundry in London of Warner & Sons and is dated1874. There is disabled access via a tarmac path to the back door and a small memorial garden behind the Church. The Church is only open at times of worship or by appointment. The nearest graveyard is at Lennel, two miles away.
