The Diocese comprises all of south-east Scotland, from the Border with Northumberland, formed by the Cheviot Hills and the River Tweed, to the estuary of the River Forth (which divides it from Fife and the Diocese of St. Andrews, Dunkeld and Dunblane. To the West it includes the towns of Bathgate, Grangemouth and Falkirk, together with Denny and Dunipace (dividing it from the Diocese of Glasgow and Galloway) and the southern suburbs of Stirling (dividing it from the Diocese of St. Andrews).
South of the Forth Estuary stretches the rich agricultural plain of the Lothians. This is divided from the Tweed Valley by the Pentland, Moorfoot and Lammermuir Hills. These plains and valleys have been settled and cultivated for centuries and have many notable mansion houses and large estates.
The City of Edinburgh and its suburbs are the largest urban area, and half of the sixty Episcopal churches in the Diocese are situated there. In the rural towns of the Borders and the Lothians, and in the industrial towns of West Lothian and Falkirk, the pattern of one Episcopal church in each area applies. In the Edinburgh area, churches are closer together, making a choice of congregation and churchmanship possible.
As varied as our churches are in location, so they range in size from large churches with a team ministry and full office staff, to a small church which may be in the charge of a part-time non-stipendiary priest. If you use the email links to our churches, most will be delivered directly to the church, but some may be forwarded from the Diocesan Centre by fax or mail with consequent delays.
