Hospital Chaplaincies

Nearly all hospitals have at least one full time Chaplain employed by the Management, Health Board or Trust. There are also usually a number of part time Chaplains from local churches of different denominations. The patient’s own clergy may visit if requested by the patient.

Unless you have been given a specific contact it is suggested that in the first instance you should phone the main switchboard and ask for the Chaplaincy.

The following is taken from the website of the former Lothian University Hospitals NHS Trust (Now NHS Lothian)

“CHAPLAINCY services are available around-the-clock for confidential, non-judgmental support. The Trust’s chaplains support people of all faiths and of none. They offer a service to patients, their families and staff that is appropriate to individual beliefs and life situations. Hospital chapels may be visited at any time.”

If a visit from a representative of a specific faith is desired, a Trust chaplain will be pleased to make the arrangements for you.
